Some people just brighten every room they enter and Willie Smith is one of those people.
The corning resident is very active in her community and everyone smiles when she comes around.
Here is Willie Smith's story in this week's installment in our Hello Humankindness series in partnership with Dignity Health of Northern California.
Willie Smith is the director of the Christian Assistance Food Bank in Corning and she has to get to work early to get any work done.
"I just enjoy working with people," she said.
Few people are as community-minded as she is.
"Willie is one of the nicest ladies I’ve ever met, she works constantly," said Karen Burnett, director of the Corning Senior Center.
Willie spends 20 hours a week working at the food bank, making sure the 300 or 400 people who need their services have food each month.
"If we put out the word that we need something we usually get it or we find it," she said.
She spends about the same amount of time in her role as chairman of the board for the corning senior center.
"She has a need to help, she just has to, it's not something she can decide not to do, it's just part of who she is," Burnett said.
Willie’s husband had a heart attack about a year ago, so she is his caregiver as well.
"I call him when I’m away, I check on him, I make sure he had his breakfast and took his pills," Smith said.
In addition, she drives to Red Bluff twice a week to volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s hospital and if that weren't enough, she got elected to the Corning City Council in 2012.
"I did it for the challenge and possibly to learn things I knew nothing about,” Smith said.
What she learned is that four years in public office is enough and she has more than enough on her plate to keep her busy.
"She’s really involved in her church, you can't go to anything in town without seeing Willie there," Smith said.
So Willie will keep showing up and keep working hard to make a difference where she can.
"I love being around people, and I love trying to help them if their situation is dire,” Smith said. “I want to help them through that."
Helping others in so many ways makes Willie Smith this week's Hello Humankindness nominee.
