Eighteen Yuba City High School students graduated from a summer program after participating in a mock city council meeting.
Since late May, students from Yuba City and River Valley have spent their weekdays at a program called “Summer at City Hall.”
Incoming juniors and seniors learned from employees and elected officials about government's many career opportunities.
The program concluded with a mock council meeting in the Yuba City council chambers.
"There's not a whole lot to do in the city, that's the number one complaint,” said Christian Ortega, a junior at River Valley. “I wanted to see what the city thought about that, and what they're doing to counter act that. So I’ve learned the process that's going on and some of the new businesses they're trying to get here."
"We’ve had tours and amazing people come talk to us,” said Zoe Hearn, a senior at River Valley. “We haven't just been in locked up in the room all day-we've actually gotten to see the city and the inner workings of it."
Yuba City Unified School District partnered with the city to provide a teacher curriculum with funding already set for next summer, they're excited to provide another valuable real-life opportunity for area high school students.
