Students speak out about incident with police

A video has gone viral on social media after a woman says she was physically assaulted by Chico Police after she was pulled over for a traffic violation.

The video that has been floating around the web was shot by another student. However we spoke with the two Chico State students in the video who were arrested about their experience.

Chief O'Brien says, "The disappointing thing about the whole incident is if Ms. Braham and Ms. Hemphill had stayed in the car and listened to the officer.."

This video was shot by a student on Saturday morning. According to Chico Police, they pulled over a car that did not have a working license plate light. Officer Steve Dyke says the driver of the car ... Nicole Braham ... got out of the car and refused to get back in. Dyke says Braham refused three requests to have a seat back into her vehicle and attempted to push past an officer.

Hemphill says, "At one point, as you can see in the video, I say 'officer you are on video right now, what has she done wrong?' At that point he points up at me and instructs other officers to arrest me. I am tackled into a bush and arrested for obstructing justice and resisting arrest."

Police say Hemphill's blood alcohol content was 0.14. Hemphill and Braham say they were mistreated by the Chico Police and it was unnecessary. Braham, the one taken to the ground in the video, says she now fears for her safety.

Braham says, "I'm afraid for myself, for my community members. I can't even step out of my house without thinking that a police officer is going to drive down the street and arrest me, detain me, throw me on the ground."

But Chico Police Chief Mike O'Brien says the situation could have been avoided.

Chief O'Brien says, "..quite frankly none of this would've happened. They would've been given a warning and then sent on their way."

Chief O'Brien says he believes what Officer Dyke did was right in his actions. The incident is still under investigation.
