Los Angeles considers ban on spice after dozens sickened

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles is considering a ban on the synthetic drug spice after it was blamed for sickening dozens of users.

The City Council on Friday directed the city attorney to write an ordinance banning the manufacture, possession, sale or distribution of what are termed "novel synthetic drugs."

Spice is the collective name for various synthetic marijuana concoctions that are sold cheaply, making it attractive to the poor and homeless.

Spice overdoses are believed to have sickened more than 20 homeless people on Skid Row in Los Angeles, and about 50 people last Friday in the same area. Many were hospitalized.

The co-author of the council motion, Mitch Englander, says the drug is wreaking havoc in communities.
