'Baseline' test aids athlete in making a safe return after suffering a concussion

'Baseline' test aids athlete in making a safe return after suffering a concussion

Concussions are not always easy to detect or treat and that's why the Chico Youth Football Organization has teamed up with Baseline Administrators to help treat them better. Action News Now's Ross Field tells us how baseline testing can help determine how a concussion should be treated.

It's something Annette Jarolin knows all too well, her son Angelo getting a concussion.

"It is almost heart-dropping," Annette said. "It's so emotional and it brings tears to your eyes to see your kid suffer."

Symptoms of a concussion include dizziness, blurriness, loss of memory, trouble with coordination and balance, etc.

This brain injury can be hard to treat.

Chico youth football is trying to change that with a series of 'baseline' tests before the season starts.

"It's going to their general cognition, short and long term memory, their reaction time, and shape and color recognition," said James Barker of Baseline Administrators Inc.

It's a way to detect their normal brain function and if they were to then suffer a blow to the head during the season, you can compare this baseline with post-concussion test scores to help manage the injury.

"What the doctor will use it for is do a post-injury retest and if that score is depressed that's going to tell the doctor that they're brain is not functioning to full capacity, hence they're probably not healed internally," added Barker.

That's good news for people like Annette, having her son take this this test could really help if he ever gets another concussion.

She'll know when he's fully healed and ready to get back in the game.

"It's comforting because it gives the doctors a starting point and to help them to the road to recovery," added Jarolin.

The testing is not only for football players, it appeals to any athlete in any sport, including soccer, cheerleading, basketball, baseball, etc.

The cost of the test is $20, but that seems like a small price to pay for the increased safety these young athletes get in return.
