Two people died and a third suffered critical injuries after a car went off the Howard Frankland Bridge near St. Petersburg, according to FHP.
Pinellas County Fire Rescue first reported it was on scene of a water rescue off the Pinellas County side of the Howard Frankland Bridge. FHP later said there were three people in the car, a 2014 Honda sedan, and two had died. The third suffered severe injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The car, a 2014 Honda sedan, was headed toward Tampa when it went into the water, near mile marker 33. FHP said the water at that spot was about two feet deep.
FHP said just after 11:15 p.m. it was closing the northbound side of I-275 while crews pulled the car from the water and finished the accident investigation. Troopers were not able to say when the northbound side of the bridge would reopen.
The U.S. Coast Guard and FWC were there helping rescue crews.
