Planned Parenthood clinics in Minnesota 'redoubling' security after Colorado shooting

Three people, including a police officer, were gunned down in a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic on Friday. Police identified the shooter as 57-year-old Robert Lewis Dear.

Dear surrendered after a nearly 6-hour standoff inside the clinic. 9 other people, including 5 police officers, were hurt. They're in good condition, but Garrett Swasey, a 44-year-old officer and a father of 2 children, did not survive.

Sarah Stoesz, president of the Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, calls the act intolerable no matter where it happens. While tensions around the organization in recent months have heightened, it's unclear what the shooter's motives were.

"Our heart goes out to the people who lost their lives. It was senseless, violent and completely unacceptable," Stoesz said.

Meanwhile, safety at the region's 19 Planned Parenthood clinics will remain the top priority.

"We will be redoubling our efforts and do everything that is humanly possible to make sure our patients and staff are safe," Stoesz said.

None of Friday's victims were Planned Parenthood patients or staff. The gunman is in police custody and they're looking for a motive. Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers commends the heroism of police and everyone involved.
