Deputies shot during gun battles off critical list

Deputies shot during gun battles off critical list

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies who were shot in gun battles with a fleeing suspect are off the critical list.

The Sheriff's Department reports Saturday that a deputy who underwent surgery is in serious condition but he's improving. The other deputy is in fair condition. Both remain hospitalized.

The deputies were wounded late Thursday after a driver drove through a DUI checkpoint in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower.

Three separate gun battles followed until the man ran to a home where authorities say he took a man hostage.

The hostage managed to escape and tear gas was used to force the gunman from a small building behind the home.

Thirty-nine-year-old Juan Martinez wasn't wounded during the confrontations. He remains jailed on $10 million bail.
