Candle light vigil aimed at unity

Candle light vigil aimed at unity

Here in the North State, the Black Student Union on Chico State's campus held a candlelight vigil Wednesday night, in an effort ,they say, to create unity and to stand against police violence both locally and nationally.

A few hundred students and community members gathered on Chico State's campus for a candlelight vigil aimed at peace.  The Black Student Union was hoping to create unity both on campus and in the community and voice concern over police brutality.

Watts says, "It brings everyone together and it shows that people actually care about what's going on here around America, what's going on with people losing their lives due to this situation."

Several students took the stage to share their personal feelings towards law enforcement.  Fortunately, the Chico area hasn't seen an officer involved shooting.

Haynie says, "We know what happened a couple of weeks ago with the young lady, who was not black, but the focus is excessive police force and it keeps happening over and over and over."

Pastor Haynie says he believes more events like this one need to continue to happen.

Haynie says, "The conversation needs to be had.  This is just one in a series of many events that is going to take place, I believe across the country, because the conversation needs to be had."

Haynie says he will be hosting town hall type meetings at his church in the months to come to keep the conversation going.
