An all clear was issued at Joint Base Andrews - with the exception of one facility - following a lockdown due to reports of an active shooter.
The situation began around 9 a.m. Thursday when reports of an active shooter on base were first reported. The situation centered around the Malcolm Grow medical facility. Personnel were directed to shelter in place and first responders were called to the scene."All Clear" for the base with the exception of Malcolm Grow medical facility-- Joint Base Andrews (@JBA_NAFW) June 30, 2016
Officials at the base told FOX 5 that the report of the active shooter incident came out while the base was conducting an active shooter exercise. "We are reacting to a report of a real world active shooter," the base said in a statement. "The call occurred during an exercise. Because the report came in as a real active shooter we have to respond accordingly. We are treating as if it is and no further information at this time."
During the lockdown, which latest about 90 minutes, armed military personnel were see directing traffic near the gates of the facility. Several people were led out of the base during this time and some vehicles were turned away.
Vice President Joe Biden, who was scheduled to leave from Andrews on Thursday morning, had his trip delayed by the lockdown.
At around 10:40 a.m., Joint Base Andrews issued an all clear with the exception of the Malcolm Grow medical facility.
At this time, it is still unclear if any incident took place on the base or if the scheduled drill was mistakenly reported as an actual incident.
