U of M student hit by taxi after football game

A University of Minnesota student is in serious condition Friday after getting hit by a taxi following Thursday night's Gopher football game. The crash happened at about 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of 4th Street SE and 12th Avenue SE.

Teddy O'Reilly, 22, of Chanhassen, Minn. was walking in the Dinkytown neighborhood when authorities believe he stepped out into traffic on 4th Street SE. The cab struck him while he was crossing the third lane of traffic.

O'Reilly suffered a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain and several broken bones, according to his CaringBridge page. He is currently under sedation and unable to speak at Hennepin County Medical Center.

O'Reilly is a member of the Gophers club lacrosse team and played for Minnetonka High School, where he was a team captain.

"He seemed to be built of iron," Aaron Oliver, coach of Minnetonka's boys lacrosse team said. "To see a guy like this go down, he is one of the last guys you expect this to happen to. [We're] all praying, pulling for him."

The coach of the U of M men's club lacrosse team, Rich Limpert visited O'Reilly on Friday and said the one thing that seemed to raise his spirits was talking about the sport he loves.

"We just started talking about the season," Limpert said. "He's all ready to come back and rejoin his teammates. He started to respond positively in the hospital."

The Airport Taxi cab driver involved in the accident stopped immediately and is cooperating with police.
