Police: Caregiver beat elderly WWII veteran with oxygen tank

A World War II veteran's in-home caregiver faces an attempted murder charge after police say she beat the elderly man with his own oxygen tank and left him to die on his dining room floor.

According to North Port police, Michael Tristano's family got concerned back on May 16 after they hadn't heard from the 91-year-old. His caregiver later said she arrived at the home that morning and found him disoriented and lying in a pool of blood after an apparent fall.

Hospital staff called police, though, when they grew suspicious that his head and arm injuries were not consistent with a fall. Tristano told his daughter that he was attacked by "some woman," but he was too disoriented to give police more information.

After interviewing Tristano's caregiver, Elena Erickson, and reviewing the scene -- which included a bloody oxygen tank -- police decided Erickson was lying.

"The evidence shows Erickson beat Mr. Tristano in the head with a small oxygen tank multiple times and left him on the floor of his home overnight to die," a police department spokesperson stated. "However, Mr. Tristano -- a World War II veteran -- knows what toughness is all about. He was able to survive the night."

Erickson, 45, was charged with attempted murder and tampering with evidence. Police made a point to thank the emergency crews and hospital staff for contacting them about with their concerns about Tristano's injuries.

The tough veteran, meanwhile, was treated at the hospital and is already recovering back at home.
