Planned Parenthood clinics in Minnesota 'redoubling' security after Colorado shooting

Three people, including a police officer, were gunned down in a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic on Friday. Police identified the shooter as 57-year-old Robert Lewis Dear.

Dear surrendered after a nearly 6-hour standoff inside the clinic. 9 other people, including 5 police officers, were hurt. They're in good condition, but Garrett Swasey, a 44-year-old officer and a father of 2 children, did not survive.

Sarah Stoesz, president of the Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, calls the act intolerable no matter where it happens.

"Our heart goes out to the people who lost their lives. It was senseless, violent and completely unacceptable," Stoesz said.

Meanwhile, safety at the region's 19 Planned Parenthood clinics will remain the top priority.

"We will be redoubling our efforts and do everything that is humanly possible to make sure our patients and staff are safe," Stoesz said.

None of Friday's victims were Planned Parenthood patients or staff. Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers commended the heroism of police and everyone involved.

Dear told investigators "no more baby parts," according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Planned Parenthood has also cited witnesses as saying the attack was motivated by Dear's opposition to abortion.

We now know the man responsible for the tragic shooting at PP's health center in CO was motivated by opposition to safe and legal abortion.
