FOX 13 Tampa Headlines

Severe weather hits the Tampa Bay area

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for several parts of the Bay Area this morning as a line of storms brought heavy downpours and steady lightning.

The first warning was issued for Citrus, Hernando and Sumter counties just after 4 a.m., and the line of storms has slowly shifted south since then, pounding Tampa and St. Petersburg during the morning rush hour and leaving some neighborhoods flooded.

A flood advisory was issued for southern Pinellas County after more than 3 inches of rain fell in some locations. Emergency crews were responding to reports of flooded cars in some areas, but officials say no drivers were trapped.

Fallen trees were blocking roads in many area, including Lithia Pinecrest Road near Fishhawk Ranch in eastern Hillsborough County.

Power outages were also reported across the region. TECO's outage map showed one major outage centered around I-275 near Old Seminole Heights, and a second outage in the southern part of Hillsborough, though many smaller outages were also being tracked.

Duke Energy also reported widespread outages in Pinellas and Hernando Counties. As of 7 a.m., their outage map showed more than 2,300 customers without power near Safety Harbor, and more than 1,000 between Dunedin and Curlew Road.

They were also working on the issue, and planned to have power restored as soon as possible.

FOX 13 will continue with updates on Good Day Tampa Bay, online and on our SkyTower Radar App throughout the morning.
