Mandatory paid sick time passes Minneapolis City Council

Paid sick time is now mandatory in the city of Minneapolis. The paid sick time ordinance passed the Minneapolis City Council by a unanimous vote Friday morning. Minneapolis is the first city in the state with a paid sick time mandate.

The paid sick leave ordinance covers any workplace that employs 6 or more people. It allows employees to earn an hour of sick and safe leave for every 30 hours worked. The ordinance takes effect on July 1, 2017.

City council research found 41 percent of the Minneapolis workforce lacked access to paid sick time, and that the workers who are the least likely to have sick leave are the most likely to have jobs requiring contact with the public.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges statement

"Today, Minneapolis has recognized that no one should have to choose between being healthy and being paid. This is a landmark day for Minneapolis. I proposed earned sick and safe time more than a year ago to improve public health for everyone and provide greater opportunity for low income families. I want to thank the Workplace Partnership Group, the diverse group of stakeholders that the City Council and I appointed to listen to stakeholders and offer recommendations to us on this issue. I thank the City Council for their thoughtful work and for passing this ordinance. And I thank the members of our community who fought so hard to get to this day."

Minneapolis Downtown Council statement

"On behalf of businesses throughout Minneapolis and the region, we remain concerned about the many impacts today's City Council vote will have on employers and employees alike. It is especially unfortunate that the adopted ordinance will disrupt administration of existing time-off plans which provide superior benefits to workers. Despite their good intentions, our elected officials do not know better than the thousands of businesses which have developed policies and practices that work well for them and the people they employ. We take Mayor Hodges and Council Members at their word that this is an unintended consequence which will be remedied prior to these new mandates going into effect."
