Severe weather leaves behind flooding

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for several parts of the Bay Area this morning as a line of storms brought heavy downpours and steady lightning.

The first warning was issued for Citrus, Hernando and Sumter counties just after 4 a.m., and the line of storms has slowly shifted south since then, pounding Tampa and St. Petersburg during the morning rush hour and leaving some neighborhoods flooded.

A flood advisory was issued for southern Pinellas County after more than 3 inches of rain fell in some locations. Emergency crews were responding to reports of flooded cars in some areas, but officials say no drivers were trapped.

Fallen trees were blocking roads in many area, including Lithia Pinecrest Road near Fishhawk Ranch in eastern Hillsborough County.

Flooding was also a problem later in the day across the Sarasota area. Major streets, like Bee Ridge Road, were flooded, forcing police to close lanes near U.S. 41.

Power outages were also reported across the region. As many as 5,000 TECO customers were still in the dark this afternoon, along with a handful of Duke Energy customers.
