The Texas Department of Public Safety was notified and the scene was secured. That portion of Jolly Road will be closed until the preliminary investigation is completed. Initially federal officials reported that there were sixteen people on board the balloon.
Investigators are determining the number and the identities of the victims at this time.
Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement following the hot air balloon crash:"Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences for all those who have been affected by today's heartbreaking tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, as well as the Lockhart community. The investigation into the cause of this tragic accident will continue, and I ask all of Texas to join us in praying for those lost."
Lockhart is about 30 miles southeast of Austin.
