Charges Filed in North Valley Hockey Embezzlement Case

Charges Filed in North Valley Hockey Embezzlement Case

The Glenn County District Attorney's Office has filed charges against a woman suspected of embezzling money from the North Valley Hockey and Sports Complex in Hamilton City.

Willows resident and mother Cynthia Ann Pfyl faces felony charges of embezzlement and grand theft.

Pfyl had served as the organization's acting treasurer since January.

"We're talking about a community project that was brought to Hamilton City and started taking off and really growing and doing well, a lot of kids were going over there, and it was, to my understanding, almost completely shut down," explained District Attorney Dwayne Stewart.

News of the apparent embezzlement at the North Valley Hockey and Sports Complex came as a shock to the community this summer.

Once board members learned they were on the verge of eviction, they immediately suspect Pfyl.

"We found out and started having suspicions and started asking questions, we immediately began to make sure that we didn't release any financial information. We were just trying to get information from her and answers from her, and we, yes, as an organization did cease contact," said Acting President of the NVH board, Wendy Calderon.

"Within a matter of a day or two the sheriff's department immediately jumped on it, started the investigation," said D.A. Stewart.

"We've been very lucky as far as Detective Felton (of the Glenn County Sheriff's Office) was concerned, and then we were also extremely luck that the D.A.'s office acted quickly on this," Calderon said.

On Wednesday, the D.A. decided he has substantial evidence to move forward.

"There are two charges, grand theft, meaning theft over $950 and embezzlement. What we believe right now is a little over $34, 000 was stolen between roughly January and June of this year," D.A. Stewart said.

"From my understanding the non-profit is having a really hard time right now just struggling without that money," said Stewart. "This is something that could break that organization. so it's very serious."

While Calderon said the organization doesn't expect full restitution, they're still relieved to see authorities taking the matter so seriously.

"We want to see justice be served, also because not only did she steal from an organization, she stole from kids. And there was no good reason to do that; She made the decision, she made it willingly and this is what she did to a lot of people," said Calderon.

As of Friday, the Glenn County Court has not issued any arrest warrant or formally summoned Pfyl to appear in court.
