Officers fatally shoot man who stabbed police dog in Roseville

Police in Roseville said officers fatally shot a man they found hiding in a closed after he stabbed a police dog on Wednesday night.

Roseville Police Chief Rick Mathwig said officers responded to an apartment building about 10 p.m. Wednesday after neighbors said they heard pounding coming from the 52-year-old man's unit. Officers also heard the pounding and forced their way into his apartment.

Police found him hiding in a closet with a large knife. The police chief said he made a stabbing motion, striking the dog in the jaw and then officers opened fire, killing the man. The dog is expected to be fine and was treated at a veterinary hospital.

Five officers have been placed on standard administrative leave, but Mathwig hasn't said how many officers shot at the man.
