Prosecutors decline to charge Gophers wrestler, for now

Prosecutors are declining to charge a member of the University of Minnesota wrestling team with dealing prescription drugs, at least for now. A spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office tells The FOX 9 INVESTIGATORS there is, "insufficient evidence at this time."

A FOX 9 investigation last month revealed allegations of four wrestlers dealing the prescription drug Xanax; with ten other athletes using the anti-anxiety drug. The wrestlers were allegedly selling Xanax, which they called "Zanny," for $5 to other wrestlers and $8 to other students. WATCH REPORT - 4 Gophers wrestlers under investigation for selling Xanax

Wrestling Coach J. Robinson was allegedly aware of the suspicions and asked members of the team to write personal essays admitting their guilt. When university police asked Robinson for the names of the suspected players and their essays, Robinson allegedly refused to provide the information unless his players were granted immunity. Robinson also requested drug testing of the players. It is not clear if any tests were conducted because Xanax is not a prohibited, performance enhancing drug under NCAA rules.

The University of Minnesota Police investigation remains open.
