HOMETOWN HEROES: Visiting Angels surprise seniors with blossoms of love

Valentine's Day came early for some very special Bay Area seniors.

"I haven't had fresh roses or flowers in so many years. It just brings tears to my eyes. It's very, very special," said Tess Griffith, a resident at Bayou Gardens Assisted Living Facility.

Bouquets of roses were handed out to each resident at Bayou Gardens by Visiting Angels, a local nurse registry and health care service.

"Sometimes older seniors don't really have someone around anymore. Maybe they don't have family or friends nearby," explained Visiting Angel's Jennifer Dimech. "We don't want them to be lonely or left out for Valentine's Day, so we just thought it would be something nice to do for them."

Tess lost her husband on Valentine's Day seven years ago and says she is grateful for the gift.

"It is very special to me to get something like this. I never thought I'd be getting flowers like this again," said Tess.

The surprise didn't stop there; they all got a box of chocolates too.

But the gifts weren't all store bought; one Visiting Angel handed out hand-made quilts from her blanket ministry.

"It's just a good thing to do. We like doing good for people," shared Visiting Angel's Nancy Hartshore.

Each Blossom of Love package was received with gratitude, a smile and a hug, from a group of women thankful to be remembered this Valentine's Day.
