FOX 13 Tampa Headlines

WATCH: Hungry shark chases tarpon in Tampa Bay

There's a lot of exciting fish stories out there, especially in Florida. Fishing Captain Rob Gorta talked to FOX 13 about what he witnessed, and he has the video to prove it. Gorta was taking his first mate and a couple from Dade City on a charter trip last Friday. They were about a quarter mile off Anna Maria Island in the middle of a school of tarpon when things got very interesting. The group had one tarpon on the line when a 12-foot hammerhead shark showed up. It quickly went after a tarpon in the school, and even damaged Gorta's trolling motor. "It was the most incredible experience ever," he told FOX 13. Even with 20 years on the water, Gorta said he had never seen anything like what he saw that day. The shark chased the tarpon through the water and the fish in the school went into a frenzy. In an attempt to escape, the tarpon that was the target of the attack actually jumped onto the boat. Miraculously, no one was hurt. As fast as it jumped in, the excited tarpon flopped back into the Gulf. "If (one) jumps into the boat with me, I'm jumping out of the boat," said Lynn Shires, a visitor from North Carolina who was going on a charter with Gorta on Monday. In the end, amid thrashing and diving, the shark eventually ate the tarpon. This adrenaline-pumping adventure lasted nearly four minutes, every second of it recorded on video.
