What was initially a "rescue mission" is now being called a "recovery mission" after a 9-year-old boy went missing at the beach Saturday afternoon.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says Cameron J. Bullard was last seen around 3:20 Saturday afternoon at St. Pete Beach near the 18 th Avenue beach access.
Patrol deputies, Pinellas Marine Units, the US. Coast Guard, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation set out to search for the child by air, water, and also on land, but after a day of searching, deputies Sunday said they believed Bullard was in knee-deep water when he got swept away by a current and drowned.
The Pinellas County sheriff said Cameron couldn't swim, and added that the currents were strong Sunday morning as boats used sonar to scan the ocean floor.
