St. Petersburg police investigating shooting

Two St. Petersburg roommates are in the hospital after a late night fight ended with one grabbing a bat, the other a gun. The fight happened just before 4 a.m. at 8201 36th Avenue. According to St. Pete Police, the whole fight started when one roommate, an unidentified male in his 20s, brought home a female guest. The man then went to bed, leaving her unattended in the home. His roommate, an unidentified man in his 40s, became upset. "They got into an argument over that situation, which escalated into one subject being battered with a bat and the other being shot," said St. Pete Police Lt. Nathaly Patterson. The older man hit his younger roommate with a bat several times. At some point the argument spilled into the street and the younger roommate fired a hand gun at the man eight times. It is unclear how many shots struck the older man, but St. Pete Police say he was shot several times in the upper torso. Neighbors, awoken by the sound of gun fire, say the three people appeared strangely calm as they called 911 and waited for help to arrive. "While waiting for police there was no arguing or heated discussion between the men and the female," said a neighbor, who did not wish to be identified. "He sounded very calm." Both roommates were taken to the hospital for treatment. The shooting victim underwent surgery at Bayfront Health. Both are expected to recover from their injuries. No arrests have been made but St. Petersburg Police say charges are pending an investigation.
