Memorial Day: List of Twin Cities events and what's open, what's closed

It's Memorial Day. Whether you're honoring a veteran or just enjoying the late May sunshine in Minnesota, here's what you need to know:

Closed: Government offices, schools, post offices, most banks.

Open: Shopping malls, movie theaters, major grocery stores, liquor stores, state parks.

Getting around: Street parking is free in Minneapolis and St. Paul on Memorial Day, with no meter enforcement. Metro Transit bus and light rail train service is running on holiday schedules, which are posted at metrotransit.org.

Memorial Day events in Minneapolis

Fort Snelling (9:45 am): The state's official Memorial Day program starts at 9:45 a.m. at Fort Snelling. Gov. Dayton and Sen. Amy Klobuchar will be in attendance. There will also be keynote speakers, a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps with flags lowered to half-staff. 345 white crosses have been set up at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Garden, each representing a service member from Minnesota or nearby states who died in the global war on terror. If you would like to pay your respects, the crosses will remain in place until 5 p.m.

Lakewood Cemetery (10:30 am): There will also be tours of the cemetery throughout the day.

Minnesota Veterans Home (1:30 pm): 10th annual Memorial Day program.

Memorial Day events in St. Paul

Veterans for Peace (9:30 am): Speakers, poetry and live music near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the State Capitol grounds.

Korean War Veterans Memorial (1 pm): State Capitol grounds.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial (3pm): Speakers and ceremony at the State Capitol grounds.
