County collects unwanted tires to reduce mosquitoes

In an effort to reduce mosquito populations in Hillsborough County, officials are asking residents to dispose of unwanted tires.

Tires left outside are known to hold standing water and can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, residents can drop off up to ten tires at the county's central service center, which is located at 4115 S. 66th Street in Tampa. Residents should bring one form of identification that shows their address.

The tire disposal event is in response to the growing outbreak of the Zika virus. The virus is transmitted through bites from infected mosquitos, and the World Health Organization has declared it a public health emergency.

The virus is known to be especially dangerous for pregnant women. It is believed to cause birth defects, including a shrunken head in infants
