FOX 5 Atlanta Headlines

Bystanders rescue overheating dogs, one dies

Bystanders had to smash out the window of a car to rescue two dogs left in a hot parking lot. Now, the pups' owners are behind bars.

Deputies say it around just after 11 a.m. -- and 91 degrees outside -- when two passers-by spotted the dogs locked inside a Mazda sedan parked outside University Mall. They said the dogs appeared to be in "extreme distress" so one of the bystanders broke a window and rescued both dogs.

According to the sheriff's office, a 5-year-old Staffordshire Terrier named 'Beast' was already suffering from convulsions and unable to walk or respond. A 10-month-old Dachshund-Maltese mix named 'Scooby Doo' was painting and extremely overheated.

Both dogs were taken to Hillsborough County Pet Resources, where they are being treated for emergency care.

One of the dogs, 'Beast,' did not survive. 'Scooby Doo' is still recovering.

Meanwhile, the dogs' owners were arrested when they returned to the car. Ashlee and Joe Frazier -- both of Grove City, Ohio -- each face two counts of felony animal cruelty.

Deputies said the interior temperature of the Fraizers' car was measured at 130 degrees -- even after the window had been broken out.
