Chico Salvation Army raising funds for new facility in Chapmantown neighborhood

Chico Salvation Army raising funds for new facility in Chapmantown neighborhood

A fundraising campaign is in full swing for the Salvation Army in Chico.

It's their biggest project yet in the hopes to improve the conditions of their facility

Organizers say they are half-way to their $6 Million goal to build a new community center in the Chapmantown area.

The Salvation Army's new community center is long overdue and Lieutenant Arwyn Rodriguera says the center currently serves about 29,000 people every year and it’s splitting at the seams.

“Right now were maxed out were pushing the seams so ideally the location will be bigger, but it depends on the funding that comes in," she said.

The new facility will be built at the old site on 16th Street.

"The Salvation Army has been in this building since the 1980's, but the building itself has been here much longer than that,” she said. “With leaky ceilings and inefficient spaces this building is in need of an upgrade. We have those duct tape moments but our hope is to give something more polished that can show even more love to our community."

The Salvation Army is deeply entrenched in Chico

"Many people don't know this but the Salvation Army has been serving Chico since 1888," she said.

The new $6 Million facility will include everything from a multi-purpose gym and a sanctuary and will serve all ages.

"We can offer more educational opportunities, more enrichment programs, for families, for seniors," she said.

But most importantly the Salvation Army wants to be a good neighbor.

"Have a better contained facility in order to be a better neighbor to those around us and give dignity to our client base," she said.

While they have already met half of their goal there hoping to raise the other half by early 2017

“In the Salvation Army, we value stewardship so we want to make sure we have the funds raise in order to be sustainable before we move forward."
