Prosecutors drop remaining charges against all officers in Freddie Gray case

Prosecutors dropped remaining charges Wednesday against three Baltimore police officers awaiting trial in the death of Freddie Gray. This decision brought an end to the Gray case without a conviction.

Wednesday's decision by prosecutors came after a judge had already acquitted Officer Caesar Goodson, Officer Edward Nero, and Lt. Brian Rice. The case of Officer William Porter resulted in a mistrial at the end of last year. The trial for Sgt. Alicia White had been scheduled to begin in October.

Prosecutors in the case had argued that Gray was illegally arrested after he ran from a bike patrol officer in April 2015. Prosecutors also claimed that the officers failed to buckle Gray into a seat belt or call a medic when he indicated he wanted to go to a hospital.

In a press conference held after the court decision, Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby defended the prosecution of the officers in the Gray case and blamed police for his death. She said prosecutors did not believe that Gray killed himself when he was handcuffed and shackled in the back of a police van. She says she stands by the medical examiner's finding that his death was a homicide. Gray's father, Richard Shipley, said that the Gray family stands behind Mosby and "is proud to have her represent us." Gloria Darden, Gray's mother, says police "lied, I know they lied, and they killed him."

25-year-old Gray's death sparked violence in the streets of Baltimore. Protests, fires, looting, and riots overwhelmed the city in the days following his funeral. Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake issued a citywide curfew and police faced nightly standoffs with protestors.

Gray's death was also responsible for a spike in violence across the city of Baltimore and prompted Black Lives Matter protests in cities across the nation.

In September of last year, the city of Baltimore agreed to pay the Gray family $6.4 million to settle civil litigation in the case.
