5-year-old may have been sexually assaulted at St. Paul bus stop

St. Paul police said a 5-year-old girl may have been sexually assaulted at her bus stop Monday morning near the corner of Cook Avenue and Park Street.

"It's a crime that makes us all sick to our stomach," St. Paul spokesman Steve Linders said at a news conference on Tuesday.

The 5-year-old was dropped off at her bus stop by her mother at 7:55 a.m. Her bus came at 8:05 a.m., but driver didn't see her and left the stop. A charter school bus picks up students at the same intersection at 8:08 a.m., and that driver saw her peering out from behind a tree, her face and shirt covered in blood. She ran toward the bus with a shoe in her hand, but she was unable to tell the driver what happened.

Police said she was crying hysterically and bleeding from the nose and mouth with her pants and underwear around her right ankle. A 911 call was made at 8:10 a.m., and police arrived to find her sitting on the bus steps.

"She was bleeding from the nose, she was bleeding from the mouth, her face was swollen, and it appeared she had a broken nose," Linders said. "In addition, and perhaps most disturbingly, her pants and underwear were down around her right ankle. She was crying hysterically and unable to tell officers what had happened."

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital, where she was evaluated, treated and released to her family. She told police she didn't know the suspect, but he was a "big older boy," a black male wearing a blue shirt and pants.

Linders said while police don't know for sure, it is "very possible" she was sexually assaulted. Experts are trying to help the traumatized girl give them more information.

Police have increased patrol in the area and ask anyone with information to call them at 651-266-5685.
