US Navy SEAL killed in Iraq has Arizona ties

A U.S. Navy SEAL who was killed during a firefight in Iraq has ties to a very prominent family in Arizona.

Fox 10 has learned that 31-year-old Charles Keating IV was shot and killed by members of ISIS in northern Iraq near the City of Mosul on Tuesday.

Keating is the grandson of the late Charles Keating and Defense Secretary Ash Carter confirmed on Tuesday morning that a United States military member was killed in the city of Mosul during an attack on Iraqi Kurdish positions.

His family says he was an advisor to Kurdish Peshmerga forces battling the terror group.

An official later confirmed the victim to be a U.S. Navy SEAL.

"I can't believe it, I'm devastated, it's like I lost a family member," said Rob Reniewicki who was Keating's track coach through middle and high school.

Keating was a graduate of Arcadia High School and was a star athlete at the school.

"He was the happiest, go luckiest boy in the world, always a smile on his face all the time. Everybody loved him, wanted to be around him all the time. He made everybody happy, made everybody smile," said Reniewicki.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has ordered all state flags to be lowered to half staff in honor of Keating.

The Department of Defense has released an official statement on the death of Charles Keating IV.

Fox 10 would like to extend our condolences to the entire Keating family.
