In honor of our 50th anniversary, AccuWeather hosted daily Google+ Hangouts with experts on various weather-related topics.
The first Google Hangout was from 1-2 p.m. EST on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. The topic was "Social Media & Weather" with AccuWeather.com Coordinator of Social Media Jesse Ferrell, Chief Meteorologist of WCNC-TV Brad Panovich, The Weather Channel Meteorologist Tim Ballisty and Olga Garcia from Google.
"The only thing harder than trying to forecast the weather is forecasting the way social media will go," Ferrell said during the discussion that took place on Monday.
The commentators discussed how social media can enhance forecasting and the way people receive their weather information. Panovich expressed the benefit of being able to access viewers in multiple social media outlets any time of the day to alert them of changes to forecasts as soon as they happen. He also discussed how this influx of information changes our perception of weather.
"Now that we have so much social media out there, people are seeing images of weather all over the world," he said. "They think that more weather is happening, when in reality it's been going on this whole time and people are just seeing it more. Our access to this information has increased so much that we're just seeing all this crazy weather that has always existed."
The second Google Hangout of this week took place on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST. The topic was cool home weather gadgets and how to install a backyard weather station and webcam. AccuWeather.com Coordinator of Social Media Jesse Ferrell and Google+ Marketer Olga Garcia led the Hangout.
Ferrell showed a variety of weather gadgets, including a magnetic weather pager that gives you current weather conditions and a four-day forecast that you can keep right on your fridge, and home weather stations.
