Is This The Best Deal For Golfers In New York City?
Feb 20, 2012; 12:52 PM ET
Anyone who lives in a major city knows how challenging it can be to play golf. When I lived in Philadelphia it was a minimum 45 minutes to get to a decent golf course and often times traffic or a great parking spot deterred me from making the trip. Some people who live in major cities, especially on the east coast, don't have cars. They rely on public transportation which isn't exactly golf friendly.
(The 8th hole at Dutchess Golf & Country Club)
In fall of 2011 I was invited by a friend to play Dutchess Golf & Country. The private club located in Poughkeepsie, New York is just 78 miles from New York City and easily accessible by train (Metro-North) for those who don't have their own transportation. A member living in the city could hop on the train and be playing golf at a private club in just under two hours.
The New York City Special
Dutchess Golf & Country Club realized they had something special with their proximity to New York City and the train and has created a pretty amazing offer for those who prefer to spend their time on the links rather than the beach. A non-resident membership for only $5,000 a year with $1,500 of this going towards local transportation (taxi) and hotels.
In essence Dutchess Golf & CC is providing a weekend escape for golfers in the New York City. You're paying $3,500 for a year of golf (on a fun, well designed course) and have $1,500 in hotel credits. As most city goers head tot he beach for the summer weekend, you could get on the train Saturday morning, play 18 (or 36), spend the night (included in your dues) at the Marriott across the street, and play 18 (or 36) on Sunday before heading back to the city on the train.

They offer reasonable guest fees if you wanted to bring a friend for a round or the weekend and offer bag storage for the entire year at only $110. There is a food minimum of $200 for the entire year and a $2,000 initiation fee that is deferred until your second year and is payable over four years.
A Great Deal?
As I mentioned above I have been fortunate to play this course and think it's a great opportunity for golfers in New York City. The laid back atmosphere combined with the quality golf course (be afraid the 6th hole) and price make this a great opportunity for any golfer looking for a great deal.
