A 'Blue Marble' picture of Earth is a modern take on the iconic image taken by astronauts on Apollo 17 on the way to the moon. The 2012 picture of the Earth was taken from the VIIRS instrument aboard NASA's most recently launched Earth and weather-observing satellite - Suomi NPP. The picture is a composite of a number of swaths of the Earth's surface taken on January 4, 2012.
