A Long, Hot, Global Story in 26 Seconds

Feb 6, 2012; 5:49 PM ET

A dramatic new video produced by NASA shows how the Earth has warmed since 1800.

Researchers at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies posted the animation last week, when they released their annual update on global surface temperature trends (ClimateWire, Jan. 20).

The video shows how temperatures have changed from 1880 to 2011, compared to the average temperature recorded between 1951 to 1980. Red areas indicate temperatures higher than the average, while blues indicate lower temperatures. GISS's climate trackers created the video in 2007 and have updated it yearly with the latest temperature data.

According to NASA, 2011 was the ninth-warmest year on record since 1880. The average global temperature was 0.92 degree Fahrenheit warmer than the 1951-1980 baseline.

Nine of the top 10 warmest years on record occurred during this century. The lone 20th-century year to make the top 10 list is 1998.
