It's tough to leave barbecues and the beach behind, but that crispness in the air means we get to exchange summer greens for the fiery oranges, yellows, and reds of autumn.

As fall foliage season gets into high gear, now's the time to head out to the leaf-strewn countryside on a road trip or an apple-picking adventure with your camera in tow.

We've asked Travel + Leisure readers to submit their best fall photographs to our photo contest, and sure enough, many went for foliage shots. We picked out photos of destinations that are particularly beautiful come fall-and may inspire your own getaway.

One striking image comes from Kyoto, Japan. T+L community member DiffSarit caught a quiet moment in a garden where someone had, by chance, matched his umbrella to the crimson shade of the maple leaves in the background.

A moodier shot shows a lonely road in Swarzędz, Poland, strewn with burnt orange leaves in a scene that looks straight out of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. In that same vein, T+L member glamourlens captured a forest with naked trees and a carpet of red leaves during a late-autumn hike to Castle Frankenstein in Darmstadt, Germany.

Back in the U.S., community member billyjo shot the Blue Ridge Parkway weaving like a silver ribbon through a hillside of orange trees. The forecast is looking even brighter this fall. With particularly mild weather this year, the leaves in New England especially are expected to be much more vibrant than in 2011, when the East Coast was recovering from the toll of Hurricane Irene.
