As heavy thunderstorms unfolded Monday evening, June 16, across the Plains, strong winds and flooding downpours were accompanied by catastrophic tornadoes.

Multiple twisters were spawned by the storms across Nebraska, Iowa and Wisconsin. However, a pair of rare, twin tornadoes barreled through northeastern Nebraska, invoking significant damage to towns in their path, killing two and injuring nearly 20 people, according to the Associated Press. Pilger, Nebraska, was among the towns pummeled by the dual twisters.

"These are some of the most violent tornadoes I've ever seen on radar," AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions Vice President Mike Smith said.
