The first and ten line has become an integral part of the football viewing experience. For those not so familiar with football lingo, obtaining a first down is essential for the offensive team to score points. And in order to do this, the team must gain 10 yards within a series of four plays (or "downs").
Sounds simple enough, but with so many other things happening on the field simultaneously, the creation of the imaginary stripe on the field serves to make the viewing experience more enjoyable. This imaginary stripe on the field is inserted into TV broadcasts, much like how AccuWeather.com broadcasters aren't really standing in front of a weather map when they are presenting a forecast. In reality, they are gesturing in front of a blank, green screen, although the viewer does not see this.
