Combination of Front and Lake Band Causing Heavy Snow
BAND OF SNOW ACROSS PA CAUSING LOCAL WHITEOUTS...
The band of snow across PA, just north of my house, is a combination of a front or trough coming down from New England and a lake band that is intersecting that front. The two have combined to produce a band of intense snow with rates of 1-2 inches per hour from near Erie all the way to North Philly. Level II high resolution radar out of State College shows a meso low along the front over NW PA. That low is holding up the front from moving south for now and that means the band will continue to sit in place for the next 6 hours. I expect reports of 6-8 inches of snow in the band with 1-4 inches around the north suburbs of Philly.

A Messy Mixture Next Week
LONGER RANGE LOOKS LIKE A MESSY MIXTURE WILL DOMINATE.
I am confident that a storm is coming next week, and it appears the storm will cut into the lakes. I think the cold air will be stubborn to go away, so on the front end, we have a messy mixture of snow, sleet and rain basically north of I-80. The question becomes, will there be more snow on the back side of the storm in the Great Lakes, and if the storm secondaries along the mid-Atlantic coast as per the GFS and EURO, will there be snow on the back side too. I think there will be accumulating snow on the back side across parts of the Great Lakes, but in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, it might be a case of the cold air flirting with the back edge of the precip. It's an interesting storm next week....
You can check out the GFS Model here.

The Coldest Weather and Heaviest Lake Effect Yet
CLIPPER COMING THROUGH THIS MORNING WILL BRING TWO DAYS OF THE COLDEST WEATHER YET ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES, OHIO VALLEY, NORTHEAST AND MID-ATLANTIC.
Just some quick comments this morning.... By the way, the Anti-Henry is jumping around this morning because it snowed last night.
1. The air mass behind the clipper is even colder than the air mass this week. Temperatures across parts of the Great Lakes into the Northeast may not get out of the 20s and even the major cities in the mid-Atlantic will have temps in the 30s Friday into Saturday. This is just too cold too early for me....
2. The lake-effect snow from western Michigan to western New York will be quite heavy through Saturday with local amounts topping two feet. The normal northwesterly flow lake-effect regions will be hammered through Saturday night. If someone reports a 36-inch amount, I will not be surprised. Even the Appalachians from West Virginia through western Pennsylvania will have up to 6-10 inches of lake-effect/orographic snow.
Long range: Looks like a messy storm coming for areas north of I-80 from Iowa to Pennsylvania Monday into Tuesday. I will post a map on the potential later this morning....
